License plates of the Territory of Nunavut Canada Prior to April of 1999, what is today Nunavut, was part of the Northwest Territories Canada. During several years there was a strong movement to separate from the Northwest Territories and this finally happened in April of 1999. There was quite a debate and argument as to which territory should retain the license plate in the form of a polar bear. After much discussion both sides agreed that the famous Polar bear license plate would remain in use in both territories as the polar bear indeed is one of the most recognized icons of the vast Canadian Artic. The capital of Nunavut is Iqaluit, and this territory is completely cut off from the rest of Canada and is very isolated. The only way to get to the Northwest Territories is by air or ferry as there are no roads leading to the Northwest Territories. With this is mind it is very understandable as to why Nunavut license plates remain quite difficult to obtain and thus the real challenge in completing a full set of Canadian license plates lies in obtaining the elusive licence plate of Nunavut!!!!
